/ About the project
The Art Department, a fully Canadian-owned platform, was created to promote and sell museum-grade art prints exclusively from Canadian photographers. To support this mission, a new visual identity and eCommerce experience were developed, emphasizing the brand’s deep connection to Canada’s artistic community.
The rebrand introduced a modular logo system for versatility, a color palette inspired by Canada’s lush greenery, and a clean, whitespace-driven eCommerce design to highlight the artwork. Built on Shopify, the site seamlessly integrates payments while leveraging third-party services for printing and shipping, ensuring a streamlined experience for both artists and buyers.
/ A coalition of artists
The Art Department was created by a group of Canadian photographers looking to promote the great local talent located in Canada. Internally referred to as a coalition of artists focused on promoting their Canadian peers, this group works together to find, promote and help sell museum grade art prints of local photographers.
To aid in the process The Art Department requested help creating a modular logo that could fit multiple spaces, a visual look and feel that was inspired by the lush greenery of Canada and an eCommerce site that could handle the selling and payments internally with printing and shipping being managed by a third-party service.
/ A system inspired by Canada’s greenery
The strategy for this project included creating a modular logo that worked in its full version, abbreviated version and a stacked version, allowing for it to fit numerous spaces at different ratios without losing any visual impact. The colour palette focused on deep greens representing the lush greenery of Canada, red (synonymous with the flag), and dark greys for contrast.
The eCommerce site relied heavily on whitespace to ensure the vibrancy of the photos take centre stage as the site itself fell into the background to be used as a tool to promote and sell the artwork.
